In the aftermath of the Civil War, grieving families sought spiritual connection to the departed. Certain clairvoyants claimed the ability to photograph the dead.

Among these mediums was Alma, a war widow, and Edward, her young son. With the moniker of 'spirit photographer', Alma's purported gift drew waves of mourners to her studio, each hoping to capture an apparition. However, when the thin line between authentic sorrow and conjured illusions begins to blur, and Edward starts to hear noises around the house, these photographers have to come to terms with the realities behind the game they’ve been playing.
